I have always been impressed by the beauty of Vangelis pads.
This musician seems to have a secret.... How does he manage to create legatos and sustains so wonderful?
Its pads look like the waves of the ocean...
What techniques and synthesizers allow him to create such a sound...?
I know he didn’t like to use soft VST...
Thank you in advance for your responese

A combination of composing talent, synthesis skills, access to fantastic hardware (list attached), unique musicianship and a unique workflow (see YT video).

There is no single ‘recipe’ I am afraid.

Ahh nice! My wife and I were watching a Vangelis doc a few nights back and I was telling her about this set up and I couldn't find the video on Youtube.

A friend of mine worked with him in the studio when he was in Paris. Vangelis arrived in the evening he lay down in the keyboard room and after 20 minutes he came out and said "you can go home no worries you will be paid normally, nothing will happen this evening". The next day he arrived and lay down in the keyboard room after more than 15 minutes he said ok we're recording now and he improvised for more than 30 minutes non-stop.

Ouah................it would be interesting to have other testimonies of your friend on this forum...

That sounds very, very, very Roland; quite probably he had a JV-1080 (or another one from the same family), with as many expansion cards as possible.
Also, love those pedal keyswitches (I think that's what they are). It's explained better https://web.archive.org/web/20160915005731/http://forum.vangelis.fr/printview.php?t=1304 (here).

By the way, here's an improvisation he did shortly after the release of Chariots of Fire for the Spanish TV program "Musical Express". Apart from his beloved Yamaha CS-80, you can also spot (and hear in use) a Roland CSQ sequencer.

I also have a soft spot for his work on Alexander:

QUOTE: "According to the album sleeve notes the album and its title are inspired by Vangelis' method of composing and recording, relying on spontaneity, with the compositional and recording process occurring simultaneously in the studio.

This process was largely facilitated by the use of a full spectrum of sound in the mixing and mastering process, due to custom MIDI performance systems designed for Vangelis and the Zyklus MIDI Performance System which was developed by technicians Bill Marshall and Pete Kellock."

“Every time a sound comes out of my hands, it has been and is always instinctive. There is no thinking and I don’t have any preconceived ideas or any preconceived plans or construction. I follow this flow until the music doesn’t need me any more.”
