We do a little sampling
For all the Dimmu Borgir listeners here, what is the favourite album in this niche community? I've noticed in the wider fans audience the newer ones are disliked or even hated. Is it different here? I'll include their Live album from Oslo and Wacken 2012 because that's basically a completely different version of all the covered songs

This is difficult, all their first 5 albums are killer.
I discovered them when stormblast came out and i very much enjoyed that album
then later Enthroned Darkness Triumphant came and i was floored by its power
i had not heard anything like that before so it became a powerhouse
in my collection and taste.
sure it was commercial but I didn't care i loved the album.
also i think Puritanical.... and Spiritual... are equally awesome too
i missed out on everything after that so i can not say i dislike those albums.
but i listened to Eonian,it did not resonate with me like
their music did back in the day so i listened again to Enthroned... to compare
I hadn't listen to it in 15 years or more and my goat! that album has grown old.
so if i were 18 years old listening to Eonian then id be utterly floored.
it has wonderful moments and id choose Eonian as their best album probably?

For all Tid and Stormblåst were most important to me when I got in touch with Dimmu - the albums before they went to Nuclear Blast and Abyss studios to get that thick, kind of Swedish sound. Enthroned is good and aged alright, but it was never very important to me personally. When it comes to Abyss-produced melodic or proto-symphonic Black Metal I rather listened to Setherial-Nord or Naglfar-Vittra. The rest of Dimmu Borgir is just not my cup of tea.

Interesting, so it seems it's roughly the same so far, I would've expected composers to have Abrahadabra or the live album as their favourite as they're the ones with the most orchestration

Setherial-Nord
THIS!!! Nord is one of the most underrated gems ever released and one of my absolute faves of all time! Too bad they never managed to surpass the debut.

On topic, Stormblåst, absolutely. Not only the first album that got me into them (never was a great fan of För All Tid) but also musically one of the most original ones...despite of that Amiga intro. :D Besides, I kind of still never forgive that musical and commercial coat-turning they pulled off with Enthrone.

I voted for "For All Tid". Maybe the epic desolate frozen cover artwork played its role to transfer this kind of music to my young (then) ears, and it is among my favorites.

despite of that Amiga intro
I have the impression that very few will understand this statement, so here we go:

Note: Agony (by Psygnosis, for Amiga) was released 4 years earlier than Stormblåst. The theme song is by Tim Wright, a classically themed, piano-led instrumental. The title song was adapted without giving him proper credit by the keyboardist of Dimmu Borgir in the song "Sorgens Kammer" for their Stormblåst album. The band did not know about this. Following several months of communication between Wright and Dimmu Borgir, and in a nod to the composer, the band did not include the track on a later re-recording of Stormblåst.

Seems like they had a run with bad members, first the keyboardist who plagiarised, then the mention of a mysterious 'Hege Seiff' in the Stormblåst booklet and then the drama with Vortex who apparently tried to sell band merch and keep profits for himself and Mustis who apparently held files hostage and tried to blackmail the band because he thought they didn't credit him enough

Puritanical for me. I also really (really) enjoyed Death Cult Armageddon and In Sorte Diaboli but lost interest after they fired Mustis and Vortex who really added to the compositions and arrangements. Their guitar tones also got weaker for some reason. I had the opportunity to see them live once in 2008 in Montreal, the show was great with some cool goth effects (monks on stage, synth interludes...)

My go to tracks on these albums for palm muting and alternate picking training are Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny, Hybrid Stigmata and Absolute Sole Right.

I recorded this quickly so sorry for the inconsistant playing

That maybe true, but firing those members put a creative end to the band IMO.
