So guys how do you like HALion 7 so far?

Me? I like it very much. Crystal clear FM synth engine, spectral zone, new modulation options, effects, LFO and UI improvements. There are still present some old and even some new bugs in the code that hopefully are going to be fixed soon in future updates.

Overall a very, very powerful beast especially in Cubase - Nuendo pipeline.

Keep an eye on Anthony Chisnall excellent HALion 7 playlist if you would like to learn more. :)

I think it is a bloody brilliant piece of musical software, that sounds terrific. Absolutely in the top tier in terms of sonic quality. I loved Halion and with v7 it has gained some brilliant new features. Now, I am an FM fanatic of course, and the implementation present here is absolutely simple and very effective.

In one word: brilliant.

It's def on my radar to purchase this, waiting for a possible sale from Steinberg etc? I will crossgrade from either Omnisphere or Falcon etc.

The only thing I still don't understand is how are layered synths and their parameters "summed up" and controlled under ONE macro control (knob, fader, pedal).

I know you can assign single or multiple parameters from HALion7 programs and layers to Quick Control but how you then sum up and control this under one physical macro I have no idea.

In my beginner mind this must be the whole point of HALion - the ultimate DAW version of Yamaha MODX and Montage Super Knob.

Could have sworn he’d pick Ableton
I thought it was a weird announcement. There are DAWs that are more amenable to laptop, collaboration, and non-studio work than Cubase.
This seems like a strange argument to me:
Cubase work great on a laptop on both platforms, and has the most features (including a great sampler) of any DAW. Online collaboration and realtime remote audio/MIDI recording is easy and feature packed (VST connect). I work every day with it outside of the studio. What DAWs are you talking about that does this better?

Regarding Ableton, Live seems to have some basic design problems:
"Internally, Live operates like a giant clip launcher / looper pedal. It "triggers and freewheel's" audio clips. It doesn keep reading audio from a hdd/ssd after the clips are launched. Hence the impossibility to keep the UI in sync with the audio since there's no sample accurate timing reading possibility, and past a certain set load it simply becomes un-manageable. It'sa core-design flaw (or core-design "feature", some would argue)".

Cubase may seem overloaded and cumbersome, but for some this is just a comprehensive set of features that no other DAW has got. I think it's an obvious choice, not only for people like me and Christian who started out with Cubase on Atari, but for anyone who needs a full featured and adaptable DAW that also does PDC and automation correct/in time when using latency heavy plugins.

Cool quotes. Relax, I’m on Cubase and Ableton myself. The surprise stems from mister Henson himself saying on occassion he wanted to switch to Ableton. Which works fine for millions of people by the way, lol. But no DAW tribalism on display here my friend, look for that elsewhere ;)

None of this except perhaps a return to his younger self playing around with music on the Atari seems to be what he is leaving Logic to get. Ableton Live, Bitwig, even Reaper in its own way would make more sense to me than moving from Logic to Cubase in order to make a fresh start. Cubase may have advantages over Logic, but they aren’t ones of freeing you from the studio or of needing to work in a certain way in the box. Its paradigm for work is very similar to Logic unlike Live or Bitwig.
