Having problems with Expression Pedal in Logic, and other Mac apps

Guys,

I’m not entirely sure where to put this. I’m having a problem with a Roland EV5 expression pedal but only on my Mac. Apparently, it works perfectly well on my Windows 10 machine using either Reaper, Sibelius or Komplete Kontrol Stand Alone. But it doesn’t work on my Mac in KK, Sibelius or Logic. Here’s the deal:

Whereas in Windows, you can execute a perfectly good decrescendo from 127 to 0, on the Mac, the lowest CC11 value you can get is 39 before the pedal starts shooting out values in the 100s while your foot is still steadily closing the pedal.

At first, I thought this was a hardware problem involving either the pedal or the jack on the S61. But I tried an identical EV5 pedal I keep in one of my other keyboard cases and the problem was the same. I then tried my first pedal on the windows machine and discovered that it worked as it always had. So, since the problem happens in all my Mac apps, I have to believe it’s something in the Mac, and not even just in Logic. It’s got to be something at the OS level. Although, I can’t imagine what that would be for the life of me.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do to restore functionality to this pedal in the Mac environment, I’d be very grateful.

Bests,

Kevin

I use an EV5 as well and have not encountered this problem. (I'm on a Mac as well.)
I'm guessing that in your Komplete Kontrol app on the Mac side, you've got another knob or fader sending conflicting CC11 data.

The problem doesn't persist on Windows. So, I don't think it's KK. it does persist even with the Logic default patch. Why?

Your OS loads the settings for the S61 as defined by KK. So it's a separate settings file for each OS. I believe the touch strip defaults to CC11, so perhaps for some reason that's where the conflict is. If that's the case, try turning the touch strip off. (I turn it off myself as I often accidentally touch it when I use the mod wheel.)

The touch strip works fine. I can get a perfect decrescendo out of it. I also don't know how to turn it off. other ideas?

In your KK app, click on the MIDI port. There you can configure your S61 to behave however you want, including disabling the touch strip if you wish.
Now that I've looked closer at the app, perhaps your pedal needs a calibration on the Mac side (with the "calibrate" button).
If playing around with KK doesn't work, you could send me a Logic test project which shows this anomaly and I'll try to see if I can figure out why this would be happening.

Hope you get it sorted out.

I'll try and attach a file that shows one chord with the expression starting at 127 to what should be 0 and then back up. You'll see the problem. Obviously, I don't know how to save a Logic folder for sharing. I thought you saved as a Package. but it won't highlight to upload. Folder just doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong? Perhaps, we can do this privately by e-mail. My e0mail is: [email protected] Screen Shot 2021-12-31 at 12.08.28 PM.png

Whoa! That is weird! I was expecting a more zig zag look which would indicate conflicting controllers.
I would suggest trying to run that "calibrate" button in KK stand-alone next.

I have no idea why things are working now because I haven't done anything that would seem to directly relate to the problem. it's as if all I have to guide Me is superstition and voodoo. All I did was to continue installing two blind guy accessibility pieces for Reaper. These are called OSARA and SWS, when those extensions were installed for Reaper, suddenly the Exp pedal functioned exactly as it should in both Reaper and Logic and I have not the slightest idea why.

so, red alert stand down. happy new year to all and thanks for caring.

I hope it isn’t an intermittent problem which comes back. I have encountered this behavior before using EV’s on hardware synths. I switched to Yamaha FC7’s for that reason. Of course this doesn’t explain why it works on windows…
