Kontakt 7.8.0 Crashes with S61 MK3 while loading instruments in Logic

Hi,

I've updated to a S61MK3, and Logic 10.8.1 constantly crashes on me when I load a couple of instruments in Kontakt 7.8.0. I drag them from the browser on top of an existing instrument, and then Logic crashes instantly. It doesn't happen when I switch off the keyboard or remove the Kontrol S61 MK3 Control Surface plug-in.

Is anybody else having this?

Thanks, Marc

@EvilDragon

Unfortunately yes. This is apparently a known issue (I'm assuming you are running Sonoma):

This appears to be an issue that lies somewhere between Apple and NI, so not clear how quick a fix there will be.

By the way, the "remedy" for now is either to downgrade your OS to Ventura; or load instruments into Komplete Kontrol rather than Kontakt, with assurances that this will work perfectly. At least on my system (Mac M1Pro, Sonoma 14.2.1, Logic 10.8.1, latest versions of K7 Player and Komplete Kontrol) this is not the case, several libraries from different developers will consistently crash Logic if loaded into Komplete Kontrol. On top of that, I discovered today that libraries loaded into Komplete Kontrol do not reliably render when bounced to disk, even if they play back perfectly.

I was hoping the Komplete Kontrol option would be palatable, but it is not for me. For now I'm going to continue using Kontakt 6 as much as possible until this bug gets sorted out.

@danstein If you remove the NI control surface plug-in in Logic, the crashes stop. Logic automatically adds it at startup, just FYI.
The older version of the control surface plug-in (used for MK1/MK2 keyboards) seems to work fine. Kontakt doesn't crash, even though I'm still using Sonoma.

To me, it feels like the release of the MK3 series was rushed, the software is not ready. We have this crash; the MIDI template editor is still missing months after the release, among other things.

MIDI template editor is being worked on, should happen in the next firmware update for mk3, along with several other nice features.

This crash was investigated AFAIK and IIRC a fix was found. I can double check.

@babylonwaves - thanks for the tip, Marc! Haven't tested extensively but on a first try removing the control surface does indeed seem to stop the crashing! Will definitely test further, but it's looking good.

I don't know if this is relevant in this context, but in situations like this, it's usually a good idea to see if temporarily removing Logic's Control Surface preferences file (called "com.apple.logic.pro.cs") and restarting the Mac makes any difference. It's located in Users>Library>Preferences.

In order to find it, you may need to press Command + Shift + . (the period key) to toggle the visibility of hidden files.

@danstein
Nice - just make sure that you delete it every time you boot logic. I'm sure you can delete the actual file somewhere to save that step but I haven't had time to try (and find the file).
