What's new

Decent Cor Anglais: ?

I use Spitfire’s EHN but in general I think there’s still opportunity to rethink how woodwinds are sampled overall. So much attention to strings (and, lately, choirs — yum) but woodwinds remain something of an also-ran, I think.

Not that I’m bagging Spitfire, as I think it’s actually quite good.

Amazing how well the very old EWQLSO winds hold up, at least the solo ones.

I really like the SSW one quite a lot. Not extremely deeply sampled but just a gorgeous sound in that register.

And the 8dio Clare EH is nice also. Not any more deeply sampled than SF, but bit more lyrical in some cases, and some very nice arcs. In certain cases this can make a difference.

And I really like one in Berlin soloists I also. With all the usual caveats (recorded dry, one dynamic layer etc. ) But the control over crafting the arcs you get is very nice for a certain type of exposed line.

I suppose it just reflects that I'm just not doing anything very complex or ambitious with the instrument ... but it really is one instrument with which I'm really quite deeply content in the quality of the sample libraries.
